World’s First! The Next-Generation 2,000-Ton Offshore Wind Turbine Installation Platform Delivered and Put into Operation Today (September 28), China’s offshore wind power industry has gained another powerful tool. The world’s first next-generation 2,000-ton offshore wind turbine installation platform—the “Baihetan”—was officially delivered and put into operation in Nansha, Guangzhou. This milestone is of great significance for accelerating China’s offshore wind power development toward deeper and more distant waters and for promoting the realization of grid parity for offshore wind power. The “Baihetan” is currently the world’s most advanced integrated wind turbine installation platform, boasting the strongest lifting capacity (2,000 tons), the deepest operational water depth (70 meters), the largest variable payload capacity (6,500 tons), and the largest deck area (4,200 square meters) among self-elevating, self-propelled platforms. Core operational equipment—including its lifting and hoisting systems—has been entirely domestically produced. The vessel measures 126 meters in length, 50 meters in width, and has a molded depth of 10 meters. It integrates multiple functions such as transportation, self-elevation, self-propulsion, lifting, installation, and dynamic positioning. With a capacity to install offshore wind turbines exceeding 10 megawatts, it can meet the requirements of integrated offshore wind power construction operations in deep and distant waters. The “Baihetan” features four 120-meter-long triangular truss-type legs that enable it to stand firmly on the sea during offshore operations. Its maximum operational water depth reaches 70 meters. Equipped with a 2,000-ton ring-pile crane, it can lift and install both wind turbine foundations and turbine components, significantly enhancing its capability to carry out construction and installation work in both nearshore deep-water areas and distant offshore regions, thereby improving operational efficiency. The vessel is equipped with a DP-2 class dynamic positioning system that can automatically maintain its position and heading even in the event of failures in moving parts or individual systems, effectively boosting safety during offshore operations. In addition, the vessel adopts an all-electric propulsion system with full-rotary propellers, enabling low-carbon and environmentally friendly operations. The “Baihetan” will primarily operate in the waters off Guangdong and Fujian provinces, further enhancing China’s capacity to construct and install large-scale offshore wind turbines in deep and distant waters. It will provide strong support for China’s subsequent large-scale, contiguous development of offshore wind power projects in these regions.
