The use of street sweepers is gradually becoming more widespread—in streets, residential communities, parks, schools, workshops, and warehouses. However, from a practical operational perspective, due to misconceptions held by some operators about how these machines work, sweepers frequently experience malfunctions. 1. Is the tighter the bolt, the better?
There are many fasteners on the floor-sweeping vehicle that are joined by bolts and nuts. It is essential to ensure that these fasteners have sufficient preload, but they also must not be tightened excessively. If tightened too much, on the one hand, the connected parts may undergo permanent deformation under external forces; on the other hand, the bolts themselves may suffer permanent tensile deformation, causing the preload to actually decrease—and in extreme cases, even leading to thread stripping or bolt fracture.
2. Is a tighter drive belt always better?
The water pump and generator of the street sweeper’s engine are both driven by V-belts. If the drive belt is adjusted too tightly, it is prone to stretching and deformation, and at the same time, the pulleys and bearings may easily become bent or damaged. Generally, the tension of the drive belt should be adjusted so that when you press down on the middle of the belt, its deflection amounts to between 3% and 5% of the center distance between the two pulley hubs.
3. Is more engine oil always better?
If there’s too much engine oil, the crankshaft and connecting rods in the sweeper’s engine will experience violent agitation during operation. This not only increases power loss inside the sweeper’s engine but also leads to increased oil consumption and potential oil-burning failures due to more oil splashing onto the cylinder walls. Therefore, it’s advisable—not just for sanitation sweepers but for any vehicle—to keep the oil level within the upper and lower markings on the dipstick.
