Although dry-ice blasting is still a relatively niche service in China, in several Western countries, it has been used for decades to clean oil and grime from surfaces in both civilian and industrial sectors. It was first applied to remove the outer coating of U.S. space shuttles and has since gradually expanded to cleaning equipment across various industries. Thanks to its excellent cleaning performance—quickly and efficiently removing surface contaminants without leaving any residue—over 80% of stain-cleaning operations in these countries now rely on dry-ice blasting. In recent years, an increasing number of domestic Chinese companies have also begun adopting dry-ice blasting to clean stains from industrial molds.
The principle behind dry-ice cleaning is that compressed air accelerates dry-ice pellets, propelling them onto the surface of the object to be cleaned. Due to the extremely low temperature of dry ice (-78.5°C), any adhering contaminants are rapidly frozen and become brittle. At the same time, the dry-ice pellets penetrate into the surface of the object that has been made brittle. As the dry ice sublimates, its volume expands rapidly, creating an explosive force from within that dislodges and removes the contaminants from the surface of the object being cleaned. The entire process relies entirely on physical properties, so there’s no need to worry about any damage or freezing of the equipment.
