The control system team is responsible for testing and launching the rocket’s instruments and equipment. Whether these instruments and equipment operate normally and maintain proper parameters directly affects the success or failure of the rocket’s flight. Yu Peng, head of the control system mission, told reporters: “For the Mengtian module to achieve precise docking with the core module while both are moving at high speed, the ignition time error must be controlled within one second. This places extremely high demands on our control system’s pre-ignition operations. Every test operation must be swift and accurate, leaving no room for even the slightest mistake.” To ensure “zero window” ignition, Yin Jingbo, the control system commander for the Mengtian launch mission, led his team to repeatedly refine the pre-launch procedures, timing every step down to the minute—and even to the second in the 10-minute countdown—to guarantee that every stage and every operation before launch would be meticulously precise. To prepare for possible malfunctions, they simulated over 190 potential failure modes and developed more than 410 contingency measures—all aimed at ensuring the rocket could ignite on time. Ten Years of Hard Work, All for One Spectacular Flight One minute on stage takes ten years of preparation offstage. These ten years of experience were painstakingly accumulated by this team bit by bit. At the beginning of the Wenchang Launch Site’s construction, the control system faced a situation where software conditions were completely lacking. Team members simultaneously studied control system theory, learned new signal rocket technology theories, and debugged and installed equipment. Relying on the spirit of “breaking through mountains and building bridges across rivers,” they laid the foundation for the control system with nearly a million words of operating procedures and supporting teaching materials. During those 908 days of arduous work, the control system team quickly regrouped and set off again. They conducted round after round of specialized training, continuously refined documentation, and repeatedly practiced simulations. They independently designed circuit sandboxes and connector operation boxes, practicing theory, operations, and coordination—all with the goal of preparing flawlessly and demonstrating their accumulated expertise. Even though the Long March-5B Y3 mission was postponed again and again, their passion remained undiminished. With two first-flight missions running concurrently, the pandemic brought unforeseen panic and other adverse factors to the control system. Yin Jingbo, the control system commander, recalled: “At that time, I served as the ‘golden finger’ for the Long March-5B’s first flight and also worked as the on-board operator for the Long March-7A. As soon as I finished one job, I quickly switched to the other to carry out tests. Through this difficult journey of overcoming hardships together, the control system team significantly improved its comprehensive measurement and launch capabilities, laying a solid foundation for subsequent missions’ continuous victories. The road ahead is long and arduous; perseverance leads to success It is in hardship that courage and determination become evident, and only through trials can jade be polished. In 2021, after the Tianzhou-2 mission was twice aborted and propellant had to be drained and refilled twice, all the scientific and technological personnel of the measurement and launch team raised the battle cry: “We’ll spare no effort for the mission, we’ll go forward without hesitation!” They staged a race against time and a fierce battle against problems. The control system personnel always remained clear-headed and focused, keeping calm and steady, cooperating closely with all systems, working together to overcome difficulties. After the successful launch of the “Wentian” module, there was no time to rest before diving into a 90-day period during which three missions—the “Zhongxing,” “Mengtian,” and “Tianzhou-5”—were running concurrently. For the young team, this “ultra-high density” was unprecedented. At the same time, Hainan was facing a severe epidemic situation, bringing additional challenges such as staff fatigue and static management restrictions, once again testing them. The control system team deeply understood the “great significance and extraordinary mission” of the space station construction task. They maintained their composure, kept their focus, built unwavering confidence, and firmly resolved to win. Overcoming the pressure of consecutive high-density missions and the impact of static management, they fought continuously under pressure, fully demonstrating their strong commitment to taking responsibility bravely before major battles. Sun Jing, who is responsible for the servo mechanisms of two different rocket models, was breastfeeding but brought her infant close by for easy care, so she could devote more energy to the mission. Dou Tianheng, who holds three positions at once; Hao Jianjun, who postponed his wedding; Wang Puhua, who raises two children alone—each comrade demonstrated with actions the spirit of sacrificing personal interests for the greater good.
