165 Major Projects! A Glimpse at China from Here In December 2014, construction began on the Chengdu-Ya’an section, which officially went into operation four years later. Looking across China, on this land spanning over 9.6 million square kilometers, there are a total of 165 major projects like the Sichuan-Tibet Railway and the Hotan-Ruoqiang Railway currently under construction. Their full implementation and effectiveness will take place during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), a five-year span. 01 From Project 156 to Project 165: From Aid-Based to Self-Reliant Construction The “Five-Year Plans,” planned in five-year cycles, chart the course for future economic and social development. For the Chinese people, the “Five-Year Plans” are milestones marking national progress and vessels recording the nation’s dreams. From 1953 to 2020, from the First Five-Year Plan to the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan, each five-year plan has created historical landmarks for its respective era. But did you know? Only twice in the “Five-Year Plans” were major projects named after numbers—Project 156 in the First Five-Year Plan and Project 165 in the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan. What’s the significance behind this? The answer is: the key link. The First Five-Year Plan kicked off when China was still poor and blank, with everything needing rebuilding. In 1957, the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge opened to traffic, giving birth to the “First Bridge Across the Yangtze.” On May 4, 1957, a celebration ceremony for the closure of the steel beams of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge was held at the bridge’s head (Xinhua News Agency photo). From then on, “a bridge flies across north and south, turning a natural barrier into a thoroughfare”—the Chinese dream of building bridges across the Yangtze River, realized after thousands of years. Many of us may not know that this massive project was built with Soviet support. Rivers and lakes remain silent, witnessing historical changes. Sixty-one years later, in southern China, a “super project” spanning the Lingdingyang waters has drawn worldwide attention. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, with a total length of 55 kilometers—the longest cross-sea bridge in the world—has been completed and opened to traffic. From the First Five-Year Plan to the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan, from relying on aid to self-reliant construction, from breaking ground from scratch to reaching the world’s peak—these major projects have set milestone after milestone on China’s journey toward modernization. 02 From Focusing on Heavy Industry to Covering Numerous Fields The 156 projects of the First Five-Year Plan were concentrated in heavy industry, covering steel, metallurgy, coal mining, oil refining, heavy machinery, automobiles, chemicals, and power generation. By the late 1950s, these major projects had laid the foundation for China’s industrialization, transforming the initial situation where heavy industrial products were scarce and crude. The land we live on is now connected by countless steel bars and iron bones. From frigid snow-capped mountains to vast fertile fields; From expansive grasslands to bustling cities; From tropical oceans to blooming flower fields. In 2019, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway opened, becoming China’s first smart high-speed railway, connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou—the two host cities of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics—and driving development along the route. Looking across China, a high-speed railway network—the largest in the world—with a backbone of “Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal” routes is taking shape, with an operating mileage of about 38,000 kilometers, exceeding the goals set in the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan. (2) Energy Not only are high-speed trains whizzing through green mountains and clear waters, but also a number of major energy projects are rising up amid stunning landscapes. After nearly five years of construction, the first batch of generating units officially began producing electricity in June 2020, and the hydropower station will achieve its goal of full-capacity operation in 2021. The green electricity generated by the Wudongde Hydropower Station is expected to replace 12.2 million tons of standard coal annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 30.5 million tons and sulfur dioxide emissions by 104,000 tons—equivalent to planting 85,000 hectares of broadleaf forests. (3) Investment and Manufacturing More than 60 years ago, the 156 projects of the First Five-Year Plan largely relied on state investment. Today, the 165 projects of the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan fully mobilize the strength of the entire society. For many projects, central and local governments contribute relatively little money; instead, social capital plays a major role, with wide participation. That means, on average, one out of every three large-size displays sold globally is produced by BOE’s 10.5-generation line in Hefei. Like BOE’s production line, the benefits of the 165 projects of the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan are comprehensive. These projects weren’t initiated simply to solve a single problem—they emphasize the ripple effect and driving force they bring. The 165 projects aren’t just about the projects themselves; they represent investments worth tens of trillions of yuan, with immeasurable impacts on investment, employment, industrial development, and breakthroughs in upstream and downstream technologies. 03 “Old Friends,” Please Give This Report a Like! Even established high-tech sectors are frequently refreshing our understanding. It’s these that have built the solid foundation of innovation for the pyramid—and will also lift up tomorrow’s brightest “stars” in the future. 04 Some Projects Are Actually “Small” Actually, major projects aren’t just those huge undertakings that reach into the sky or dive beneath the sea; many are “small” projects that you and I might not easily notice. To fill the stomachs of “foodies,” in recent years, the country has built about 80 million mu of high-standard farmland each year. They’re all farmland—why is this particular one called “high-standard,” and what exactly makes it “high-standard”? Take a look at some data: High-standard farmland increases grain productivity by an average of 10%-20%, raising grain yield per mu by about 100 kilograms. In 85.5% of sampled project areas, grain productivity stability during severe weather disasters is higher than in non-project areas. With such farmland, not only are we “foodies” blessed, but farmers are smiling too—comprehensive income per mu can increase by about 500 yuan.
