Xinhua News Agency, Xining, October 26 (Reporters Luo Xiaofei and Xie Tongqiang) — A batch of large-scale wind and photovoltaic power projects, designated as national key bases, recently began construction simultaneously in Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province. With a total installed capacity of 10.9 million kilowatts, these new-energy projects are part of the first phase of China’s recently launched 100-million-kilowatt large-scale wind and photovoltaic power base initiative. The construction of these projects is of great significance for Qinghai to accelerate its development into a national hub for clean energy industries.
It is understood that the large-scale wind and photovoltaic power base projects now commencing construction include 8 on-site consumption projects and 7 second-phase transmission projects under the Qinghai-Henan DC transmission project. By energy type, the projects comprise 8 million kilowatts of photovoltaic capacity, 2.5 million kilowatts of wind power, and 400,000 kilowatts of concentrating solar power. The total investment for this batch of projects exceeds 65 billion yuan, and they will be completed one after another before the end of 2023.
Xie Xiaoping, Chairman of the Board of China National Electric Investment Corporation Yellow River Upstream Hydropower Development Co., Ltd., introduced that among the projects commencing construction in this round, the company is responsible for the second phase, Section 2, of the Qinghai-Henan ±800 kV ultra-high-voltage direct-current transmission project. During the construction of the power station, they will fully implement the concept of ecological protection, integrate and apply the company’s years of innovative achievements into the design and equipment manufacturing of the power station, promote standardization in power station construction, and safeguard the plateau’s ecological environment.
Qinghai boasts strong sunlight and high wind speeds, and its desert, gobi, and arid regions are rich in wind and solar energy resources. Qinghai enjoys significant advantages in the development of new energy sources. The area of desertified land suitable for photovoltaic power generation and wind farm construction exceeds 100,000 square kilometers. The theoretically exploitable potential of photovoltaic resources stands at 3.5 billion kilowatts, while the technically exploitable potential of wind energy amounts to 75.55 million kilowatts.
